How much does it cost to get a tattoo?

Prices vary greatly depending on, size and placement, the best way to obtain an estimate is to either contact the artist directly or come by the shop.

Is there a shop minimum?

My starting rate is R400. Remember you are not paying for the size of the tattoo in this regard but rather the cost of the equipment used and set up. New equipment is used for each and every individual client. If you get a small tattoo during the same session as getting another tattoo, only an extra R150 will be charged on top of the original quote.

How old do I have to be to get tattooed?

You must be 18+ to get tattooed at Franken Voltage Ink.

How old do I have to be to get a piercing?

You must be 18+ to get pierced at Franken Voltage Ink or parents consent is required for anyone younger than 18 years.

Are walk-ins welcome?

Walk ins are welcome for piercings only but will be addressed on a first come first serve basis.

Unfortunately we do require an appointment for tattoos or you could contact the studio to verify availability.

Do I have to leave a deposit?

Yes, we require all clients to leave a R400.00 deposit when making their appointment to be tattooed. This deposit then goes towards the price of the tattoo. If the tattoo requires more then one session, your deposit will be taken out of the last session. Deposits are nonrefundable. If the appointment needs to be rescheduled or cancelled, the deposit will be forfeit.

What do I do if I need to cancel an appointment?

In order to cancel or reschedule an appointment you must call the studio during business hours, or contact Kim directly. Please note that all messages left after 16:00h will not be checked until the following day. All deposits are non-refundable.

Can I bring a friend?

You are allowed to have a friend accompany you to your appointment, however due to limited floor space we ask that you please limit it to only one guest.

Can I return an Item?

No returns are accepted due to hygiene purposes.

Preparation

First and foremost, stay hydrated leading up to your tattoo. Staying well hydrated makes your skin more resilient which will allow it to endure longer tattoo sessions and help heal faster following your tattoo session.

Do not drink alcohol or take any blood-thinning products the night before your appointment. Heavy bleeding makes it difficult for the artist to work, more difficult for the ink to stay in and more difficult for you to heal and this will prolong the healing process.

Eat a good meal before the time. Your body burns fuel whilst being tattooed – not eating can result in dizziness and a lot more discomfort than usual. Occasionally even causing you to pass out of experience severe nausea.

Shave the area where you will be tattooed to create the smoothest possible surface to work on. A small amount of light body hair or peach fuzz is acceptable. But for ideal results, it is best to have no trace of hair. If you opt for waxing, make sure you do well in advance of the date you will get your tattoo. The skin will need time to heal before getting your tattoo. PLEASE DO NOT MOISTURISE BEFORE. This will interfere with the tattoo process.

Get a good night’s sleep before your tattoo session. Head to bed early as you will be needing energy and strength to be able to sit comfortably throughout your session.

Tattoos will not heal well on damaged skin. Which includes sun tanning of fake tans, sunburn, a chemical peel, or any skin abrasions.

Weightlifting and strenuous exercise should be avoided at least 2 days before the tattoo session. Putting strain on your muscles can cause swelling and soreness which may exacerbate the sensation of the tattoo and impact healing time. It can also cause your skin to stretch slightly which can end up with your tattoo being distorted when your skin returns to normal. You will need another 3 days to rest after getting your tattoo to prevent any infections as it will be like an open wound.

Dress comfortably and appropriately. Prepare for a long session and dress accordingly. Avoid tight and constricting clothing. Pay some mind to where you will be getting tattooed and make sure the clothing you wear leaves the area accessible..

Remember your part after getting your tattoo done is more important than mine. Ensure that the cost of your aftercare product is taken into considerations when you are budgeting for your tattoo. Make sure you follow your artist’s aftercare instructions properly. Rather spend a little more on your aftercare products to ensure the longevity of your tattoo.

Otherwise come relaxed. Getting tattooed is exciting but the process can also be boring. Some people like to have something to read or something to keep themselves occupied with as long as it does not disturb the tattoo artist.

Aftercare

Taking care of your tattoo is just as important as the application of the tattoo itself, they both work hand in hand to ensure the quality of the healed tattoo remains vibrant and clear.  Caring for your tattoo can prevent any complications and ensure that it heals properly. Proper aftercare is not just a once off treatment, you will need to moisturize and protect your tattoo regularly and the use of sunscreen is strongly advised. This will prevent your tattoo from fading and will help to keep the colours looking bright and solid for many years. Tattoo aftercare is an important part of preserving your tattoo.

Aftercare is equally as important after getting a piercing. When you get pierced it makes a small wound and the use of aftercare is how you ensure this wound heals without complications such as infection.  Not following correct aftercare instructions will not only prolong the healing process but will cause discomfort.

Studio Safety and Hygiene Procedures

Here at Franken Voltage Ink we pride ourselves in adhering to the strictest and most professional hygiene measures to create a safe and sterile working environment for our clients.

All tattoo machinery, work stations and tattoo chairs, as well as any other equipment that will be touched during the tattooing process, is newly wrapped and covered for each client.

Other items that will be used during the tattooing process such as ink caps, tattoo ink, gloves, Vaseline, paper towels etc. are all brand new for each client and are disposed of in the correct manner.

The needles are always sealed and opened in front of the client and are disposed of according to the legal regulations for this industry.

Non-disposable tools and jewelry are sterilized thoroughly using either the Autoclave or UV Sterilizer or both.  This process exposes the equipment to temperatures high enough to eliminate any spores or bacteria.

All surfaces including the studio beds and furniture get disinfected with a fast drying disinfectant after each and every client.

Floors and walls get cleaned regularly with an anti-bacterial product.

Do you tattoo on hands or fingers?

I do not do hands as hand tattoos never heal perfectly. They will either smudge, blur or lines will disappear within a matter of days/weeks. I would advise going from the wrist down.
